Sam is trying to figure out the rules to play with Abby. It is so funny to
watch. He will sit on the dining room chair and waite for her to run by.
Them he jumps off the chair and runs after her. When she stops he's not sure
what to do so he goes back to the chair and waites for her to come back into
the dining room. It looks like Abby and Sam are going to be friends after
all. Cinnamon still doesn't get along with Sam but, I hoping it will change.

I can't believe how good Sam is doing. He loves to play and every thing he sees is his toy. He will bring a knitted ball for me to toss for him. Play a while and bring it back for me to toss again. He has claimed the house as his and is getting braver every day. We still put him in his room at night and when we go out. He is still learning manners, such as not putting his paws on the bird cage.
This week he learned to use a cat door. We have one in our bedroom door and had been closing the door to give my other cats a place to go away from Sam. Well that won't work any more. He also loves to lay on my feet when I'm watching TV.

When I'm on the computer I pull an extra chair near mine for Sam to sit on. First I feel a paw on my leg and then another paw. Sam climbed onto my lap for the first time. He laid down and was relaxed about it.

On Dec 25 we started letting Sam out of his room when we are home. He has come down the stairs a few times. The other cats still hiss at him. At least they haven't gotten into a fight.

Sam has had a busy week. On Wednesday he went to be neutered and had his shots at the TEAM van. They are a low cost spay/neuter van than travels around the state. This was set up through the shelter I'm working with.

We have been taking him things out of the cage over the past few day and last night removed the cage from the room.

He lets us pet his belly a little bit now. We are still working on picking him up. He will come over and rub against my leg or rub his head on my slippers. The other day I was sitting on the floor with him and he was laying against my leg.

I have been trying to hold Sam a little every day or so. This morning he was playing with the mylar toy in the cat condo. Tonight he was looking for me to play with him using the mylar toy. He would go from the bottom of the condo to the top shelf inside it. I also saw him using to carpet side of the condo as a scratching post for the first time. He is playing really crazy tonight, just like any other kitten would. Each day he is getting braver about being away from the cage. The cage is his security when a sound or movement scares him. Up till today he would only play around the side of the cage ,today he was about 3 feet away.

Today I held Sam for the first time. I was sitting on the floor and I reached into the cage and put him on my lap. He just stayed for a short time. Later Peter picked Sam up and was holding him. I have a picture of me sitting in a chair with Sam on my lap. This time he was more relaxed. Another mile stone for Sam.

Peter has been giving Sam treates every day and he no longer hisses at him. I can now pet Sam with 2 hands on him. The next thing will be to try to pick him up. We are going to let Sam out of the cage in the next few days. We just need to straighten up the computer room some.

Friday
Sam on longer hisses at us when we try to pet him. Today I started brushing him and he likes it.
Later in the evening I went to see Sam and he cried when I talked to him. I decided to sit on the he floor in front of the open door. I reached in to pet him and he stretched out on his side and was purring. This the first time I heard him purr. While is was sitting there he came over to eat and I was petting him and he started to purr again.

Thursday night I was outside the computer room door calling Cinnamon to come to bed with me and Sam heard my voice and cried. I went in and talked to him for a few minutes.

This morning the mother left for the vet to be spayed. She will spend 2 weeks in a temporary home and them go to live on the farm. The other 2 kittens leave later today for their foster home.

Sam went to the vet today for his first checkup. Yes, Sam is a male. He tested negative for
FIV/FeLV and had his first rabies shot. He will get the rest of the shots when he is neutered on Dec 8. The vet said he is 21 weeks old.

Monday Nov. 15
Sunday we had 2 messages from Vicki at the shelter. They have a farm that is willing to take the mother cat. She will be fixed and then given to the farmer. She is a good hunter and will be happy there. She just isn't going to be happy living with people.

The kittens will be going to a foster home on Thursday. We told Vicki that we want to keep Sam. This is the first time she has had some one want to keep a rescued kitten. After Thursday this diary will be about our progress with Sam and any updates we might get on the others.

Sunday Nov 14
Peter (my husband) has started hand feeding them human food. Last night Mittens sat up to take the food from him. We are starting to get the kittens accustom to being handled by picking them up a few inches off the cage floor and puting them back down.

Friday Nov 12
All the cats now have names. The mother is Angel, Sassy is the small back one, Sam for the tiger and the long haired is Mittens.
Today Peter is starting to pick up the kittens a few inches off the cage floor and then putting them back down. They need to get accustom to being touched more. He did hold Mittens against him for a few minutes

Thursday Nov 11
Vicki from the shelter came over today. We were going to try to find out the sex of the kittens, but we never did. They need more time before we handle them that much. She did hold the tiger kitten and it did relax some. The black one got away from us and wedged it self between the wall and a large book case. We finally got it out and back in the cage. For now they will stay in the same cage.
The mother is not happy we people. It is looking more like she is semi feral and will not make a good pet. Vicki is looking into placing her as a barn cat or with someone who cares for feral cats.

Sun Nov 7

I was petting the kittens this morning.

We caught the mother this morning. I’m so happy. I was starting to think she would leave my yard and we wouldn’t catch her.
She is in the same cage with the kittens. The tiger was the first to sniff her and then rubbed against her. She then sniffed all the kittens and they are now lying against their mother. It was so good to see them all together and happy. The tiger was lying near the mother’s head and touched its nose to the mother’s face and was purring. The first time I heard any of them purr.

Sat Nov 6

Peter was petting the kittens today. They are also playing more each day.

Nov 5
Last night they had been playing and had the newspaper lining the bottom of the cage pulled up.
This morning they were spread out in the cage.
Tonight they all played with the mylar toy for the first time. The tiger and small black one also eat while I was playing with the others.

Nov 4
Before going to bed I was standing in the hall way calling my cat to come up to bed with me. Each time I called her I heard a soft meow from one of the kittens. I went to their room and talked to them and feed them a little food. This was the first sound I have heard from them other then them hissing at me.

Wednesday Nov 3
We set the trap out and in one hour we caught the 3 kittens. We are still trying to trap the mother. The first 2 days the kittens just huddled in a corner of the cage.

Oct 28
After 2 weeks I called the shelter back. They didn’t have the room for the cats. I spend Monday and Tuesday morning calling shelters to try to find a place for them .By Tuesday night I was so frustrated I thought I might have to take them to a kill shelter. My friends at RPCA encouraged me to keep trying or to take them in myself. On Wednesday night I got a call back from a shelter that was willing to help me.

Oct 29
Peter is building a cage to keep them in. We finished the cage Tuesday morning.

Week of October 24
I was working in my yard this week cleaning up the flower beds and the kittens were watching me. As I worked down the side yard they would follow me staying about 10 feet away

Week of October 17
The kittens are coming out into my rock garden to play now. They are getting bolder each day

Friday Nov. 5

About 6 weeks age I saw a mother cat and her 3 kittens in my back yard. The kittens are about 5 months old. A few days latter they were still there so I called a shelter to see if they would take them. It was suggested that I feed them and try to find out how friendly they were. In 2 days they were coming out from behind the fence when they heard my voice. The mother never came out while I was there but would sit on the small fence behind my stockade fence.

Each day I can get a little closer to the kittens.
